Wedgwood Kitchen
The Remodel of this Colonial-style house included the challenge on linking a small, boxy kitchen with the living areas, improving circulation and creating efficient workspaces. The previous cabinet layout above the peninsula created an awkward separation of the work area from the breakfast nook and family room. The owners envisioned opening up the space as well as updating appliances and fixtures. To accomplish this, the cabinets and soffit above the peninsula were removed and the window over the sink was replaced. The floor plan changed subtly when approximately 20 feet of wall surrounding a water heater and furnace was removed, allowing for a double wall oven and additional cabinets. The water heater and furnace were relocated to the garage. An existing pantry door was replaced with a 6-panel door and the existing aluminum window was changed to Anderson double hungs.
The owners chose Canyon Creek cabinetry from the Millenium collection in natural cherry, and added matching crown molding and wood edges. The wood tone of the cherry harmonizes with the décor throughout the home. On the new oven wall, cabinets with glass doors house decorative dishes and a collection of crystal. Matching cherry panels were installed on a new Sub-Zero refrigerator. Oak floors offset the elegant clear-grained cabinets.
The restyled peninsula houses a Dacor cooktop with Venmar down draft venting system. The double oven is a Dacor in stainless steel. The sink was replaced with a Kohler Executive Chef self-rimming sink with Kohler faucet in brushed chrome. Countertops are a textured Nevamar laminate with wood self-edge. The backsplash is tiled with white ceramic and a colored mosaic strip. Care was taken in the design to ensure the addition of electrical outlets would not interrupt the pattern.
The lighting scheme was addressed with the addition of recessed task lighting, a surface-mounted ceiling fixture for general illumination positioned in the center of the room, and a new pendant fixture at the eating nook. Under cabinet lighting was added for tasks and to create a warm light in the evening. Additional duplex outlets for the oven and small appliances and in an appliance garage.
The new footprint created an efficient work triangle that allows the cook to work unimpeded; family and guests may pause to visit, or pass through to one of the adjoining common areas.
