Medina Theater
When the owners of this Medina home relocated from Europe, they brought with them a passion for Formula 1 Racing, International Sports, and films. Their desire to experience these events from the comfort of home lead them to under-used space in their basement – and the creation of a beautiful home theater.
Architecturally and technically savvy, the owners chose state-of-the-art technology and a design motif that complemented their modern home, along with a high caliber of craftsmanship. The vestibule entrance provides a transition from the living space to the home theater while housing glass display cases for candy, a small refrigerator for beverages, and niches for movie art. Changes in the coffered ceiling heights create a forced perspective, influencing by existing HVAC constraints in the ceiling. A galaxy black granite countertop is set off with cherry wood cabinetry trimmed in black. Mimicking the home’s elegant yet subtle detailing, columns bear sconces on dimmers that are augmented by both track and recessed lighting on the ceiling. A cork floor, with large checkered rust and beige squares, creates a more whimsical atmosphere.
After you enter through the double doors, you can settle into one of seven motorized reclining black leather seats. The second row of seating is located on a permanent wood riser so all seats offer unobstructed viewing. In addition to soft rope lighting in the elaborately coffered ceiling, the sconces are replicated in the theater. The 13’x22’ theater has dual projection screens: one dedicated to movies and the other for gaming. Four of the eight Revel speakers are the only visible equipment in the room.
The owners access their collection of CD/DVDs and other audiovisual equipment by pressing on two wall panels, which reveal a hidden cabinet. All controls are automated through a wireless color touch-panel remote control. The 12’x8’ projection room contains the movie projector, sound system amplification, and three main front channel speakers. The room is temperature controlled for sensitive equipment and is treated with highly absorptive materials to minimize noise leaks into the theater space.
